The first time I attended a non-family party as a child, I was served one slice of plain cheese pizza, a cup of RC Cola and a grocery store-brand birthday cake. There were no words to describe the disappointment I felt - - where were the unlimited bbq skewers, piles of pancit, piping hot lumpia, and that one questionable plate of 'chocolate meat' in the corner? There was no karaoke but I did get a goody bag at the end of the party. Luckily my family's parties have never been that lame, thanks to North Star Cafe and Grill. They have been catered family events for us both big and small. While we didn't have cake pops at my bridal shower or my niece's first birthday, we did have a whole roasted pig (priorities people) that was the talk of the party. There is always a sense of excitement when the first person takes a big butcher knife and sinks it into that crispy, crackling, golden brown skin. It's like tapping your spoon into a creme brulee dish, but much, much porkier. The only complaint is when all of the guests eat all of the skin and there is only meat left over. I'm usually against genetically modified items, but if there was a way to genetically modify a pig to have more skin, I would definitely not be mad. While their lechon is definitely a highlight, their other Filiipino dishes are also pretty legit. Maybe not as good if my Lola cooked, but ordering from them ensured that everybody could enjoy themselves without any fuss. I have never eaten in (only large catering orders) so I can't say much about the dining establishment itself but I'm proud to say that for the past fifteen years I've been a customer.

It's hard to find good Filipino food and restaurants. This place is no exception. I've been here a few times over the years and only when I'm really feeling desperate for Dinaguan. It's a stew made from pork intestine and blood. It's nickname is "chocolate meat", probably because it looks kind of like Mexican Molé, which is a stew that is actually made with chocolate.. Anyway, the service kind of sucks. When ever I do go in there, there's someone behind the counter that does not greet you. They just sit there not paying attention to anything but their phone or magazine. When you do get their attention, they just look at you. No manners, no customer service. The food always looks like it's been sitting there for a few days. That's why I only get the Dinaguan, because it's a stew. Other than that, this place is really quite depressing. Somehow they've managed to stay in business through the years. I'll just keep to my routine of dropping by every now and then for that one item.

Small Filipino Point and Pick food cafeteria style but good enough if you don't want to cook Filipino food at home. Just go here for your Filipino food but don't expect to have everything.

They serve "Authentic Filipino Cuisine". It's part food and travel. The travel agency next door might be a hazard with her driving in the parking lot. The rug at the front door is so dirty, that I jumped over it. On the inside it's set up like a mom & pop store with two tables. I wasn't greeted friendly at all. the dishes I wanted they don't have but I will be willing to try the dessert -if i am greeted friendly- in the far future. Food: You can see it sitting in a little tiny buffet. Not So Good: If you do not know Filipino language or foods you might need to venture back into dc to a place that's a little bit more known. The nice lady did tell me a little but not enough to win me over to trying something new. That's not usual for me. Menu: it's extensive the pork barbeque is something I would like to try Good: It's run by what appears to be a family. the older and wiser lady has manners and I hope the next time I come that she can educate me about the other dishes I don't know besides the pho noodles in soup that I wanted. Hopefully your visit will be better than mine.

My son decided to host a family get together for Christmas & wanted the whole family to gather at his newly bought house in Virginia. Having lived overseas for almost 20 years, he was eager to see everybody gathered in one roof, to have a family reunion at his new digs.... and celebrate, I decided to order a lechon/ roasted pig for the occasion and was referred to call this restaurant & Grill called Northstar, which was an hour and a half away in Maryland. I had it delivered & it came on time. The Lechon was so good, delicious & very tasty as it was cooked "Cebu" style, which means, the belly was stuffed with a lot of herbs before it was roasted. What was so special was that it skin was so crispy till the evening. The sauce was super delicious! It made a good Paksiw na Lechon on the left overs !! This is a dish made of the roasted pig & it's sauce.. Everybody enjoyed the Lechon !! It sure was a hit!!

Overall the food was good. The only issue I had was there is a $10 min to use plastic. There was no sign posted and they required me to meet the $10 so I had to purchase more.

North Star Bakery and Carryout is a little hard to find if you aren't looking for it. It's located in what looks like a large house and if not for the sign, you would probably drive right by it without even knowing. As for the place itself, it has some good points and some bad. Their bakery products are excellent, especially the pandesal (Filipino rounded bread). North Star is also fantastic when it comes to their catering and providing the much sought-after lechon baboy (Filipino roast pork). They are the only place in the area that I've been able to find REAL lechon paksiw (pork stew). Most Philippine establishments around here fudge on paksiw by using lechon kawale and letting the pork bellies soak in gravy. I much prefer the paksiw made straight from the pig...not from left overs. What I found lacking at North Star was the ready-to-eat food from the warmers. Maybe it's me but every time I've been there the food in the warmers look like they've been sitting out for too long. All the items look really dry and brown. It's obvious the place was never meant to be a sit-down restaurant. You shouldn't expect any type of service after getting your food. There are a few small tables placed under a television in the corner by the front door, but they are an afterthought...and the entire place probably wouldn't seat more than maybe 10 people. If they had a cleaner and more spacious dining area they would get three stars from me...but as it is I'm settling for two. (Photos uploaded)
